Kandy Esala Perahara 2025
Experience Sri Lanka’s most sacred and magnificent cultural procession.
The Esala Perahera is one of the most magnificent and sacred cultural festivals in Sri Lanka, held annually in Kandy. This grand procession takes place in July or August and honors the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is kept at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa).
The festival features beautifully decorated elephants, traditional Kandyan dancers, fire performers, drummers, and whip crackers who parade through the streets at night. The highlight of the procession is the majestic elephant carrying the golden casket symbolizing the Sacred Tooth Relic.
Esala Perahera reflects Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage and cultural traditions. It attracts thousands of local and international visitors each year, making it one of the most important religious and cultural celebrations in the country.
